Guest Speaker:

Franklin Loehde

90 Years of the Edmonton RASC

Edmonton RASC members in 1942.

The Edmonton Centre of the RASC formed in March 1932, making this month our 90th anniversary. Franklin Loehde will lead a discussion about the early days of the Edmonton RASC helping us understand how the centre got its modis operandi from the people who started it, why they did it and how these different personalities helped to create the dynamic centre it is today. This presentation will be very interactive, and Franklin welcomes questions from the audience. He also recommends that you read the posted historical articles about the Edmonton RASC so that you can ask him more detailed questions!

Franklin Loehde was not yet born when Edmonton RASC was formed. However, he joined as a high school student and knew many of the founders of our club. Franklin has been a RASC member for over 6 decades, and has served as a past president both of the Edmonton RASC and the National RASC. Franklin was part of the committees that proposed the construction of the Queen Elizabeth II Planetarium (which opened in 1960) and later, the Edmonton Space and Sciences Centre (opened in 1984) now known as Telus World of Science – Edmonton. The International Astronomical Union has named Asteroid 85121/1976KF3 in his honour. In recognition of Franklin Loehde’s years of service to Canadian astronomy, he was appointed as a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada in 2016.
