Summer nights are the shortest, so why do I always do more observing in summer than any other season? Because there exists a surprising variety of fine celestial sights for the intrepid observer and/or photographer. In addition to these subtle annual delights, in the coming weeks and months our evening skies will be studded with bright apparitions of the planets Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and especially Mars.
