Dr. Gladstone talked about different types of black holes, what they are and how astronomers find and study them. There are two well known types of black holes: the regular ones (as seen in science fiction), known as stellar-mass black holes, and those found in the centres of galaxies – the so called super-massive black holes. A third type has been predicted, the elusive intermediate mass black holes. Dr. Gladstone discussed why astronomers think they should exist and some of the ways that she and her collaborators are trying to find them.20130311_ngc4490
