View the cosmos from campus, then discover space as it was understood in 1960 through the beautifully animated documentary Universe (1960, 28 min 53 s). Most widely known for being among the sources used by Stanley Kubrick in his 2001: A Space Odyssey, Universe is an Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning short made by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB).

Panel Discussion Topics:

  • What we knew about the universe in 1960 and what we know now, almost 60 years later.
  • How astronomy research was done in 1960 and how it is done now.
  • The loss of the David Dunlap Observatory (where the film was shot) as a research institution because of urban sprawl/light pollution.
